Het werd gebouwd tussen 1895 en 1900 naar een ontwerp van architect Michael Preobrazhensky. De kerk werd gebouwd omdat de orthodoxe bevolking toenam. Nadat Estland in 1918 onafhankelijk werd van Rusland, ontstonden er plannen om de kathedraal te slopen. Voor veel Esten was het gebouw symbool voor de russificatie en onderdrukking.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Een gebrek aan geld voorkwam de sloop. Tijdens de Duitse bezetting, die in 1941 startte, werd de kerk gesloten. Nadat de Sovjet-Unie Estland in 1945 bezette, ging de kerk weer open. Nadat ook deze bezetting ten einde kwam, in 1991, werd besloten om de kerk te restaureren. Het gebouw verwierf de status van monument in september 1995. In de jaren erna werden nog restauraties uitgevoerd.
